Leadership for PGI has been come from both public and private sources. These people and organizations are responsible for the success of the PGI:
- Dr. Ann Bartuska, Deputy Chief for Research and Development at the U.S. Forest Service, was instrumental in elevating the benefits of PGI. Her commitment to the success of the PGI increased support of conifer genomics in other federal agencies to make the PGI a priority on many agendas.
- The US Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Research Advisory Council continues to echo the benefits of supporting PGI efforts.
- The American Forest and Paper Association
- Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance is a strong supporter by giving the PGI a high priority in their biotechnology and tree improvement plan.
- Experts at ArborGen and Amie Brown have been instrumental in supporting efforts to educate stakeholders on the benefits of conifer genomics and the need to support the PGI.
- The Forest Landowners Association, along with its network of forestry professionals, has created tremendous visibility for the PGI at grass-roots and legislative levels.
- Individual researchers, the IFB’s Forest Biotechnology Partners, and Dr. Robert Kellison
The Pine Genome initiative is managed by the Institute of Forest Biotechnology (IFB), and an Implementation Committee of experts from academia, government, and industry organizations make sure the PGI benefits society. PGI's Science Advisors and Jeff Dean, PGI’s Science Liaison, make sure the PGI is consistently based on science. Adam Costanza, IFB President, and Randy Johnson, National Program Leader for Genetics Research at the U.S. Forest Service, co-chair the PGI.
